Thomas J. Muldoon
AmX President and founder Tom Muldoon received his Undergraduate BSME from Marquette University with an emphasis in Thermodynamics in 1974 followed by an MBA from University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh 1983.
Tom received his Professional Engineer Certificate and has been an active member of the ASME since 1977, and was elected as ASME Fellow in 2014.
Tom started his career as an Engineering Specialist at UOP, Inc. working with heat exchanger design specifications for the hydrocarbon processing industry. Tom left UOP to work at Perfex Energy Systems Division which specialized in the design and fabrication of high and low pressure heat exchangers for the Power and Process industries. This included performing as the engineering Field Service specialists at Perfex with direct involvement in the field repair, modification, and failure analysis of high pressure heat exchangers. These repair techniques included explosive tube welding and plugging.
In 1985, Tom started Heat Transfer Specialists to perform independent consulting engineering services primarily for the power industry. A year later he founded American Exchanger Services, Inc. (Am-Ex, now AmX) upon the successful negotiation of a licensing agreement with International Research and Development Co. in Newcastle, England for the use of their "impactor" explosive welding technology.
Tom founded AmX after seeing an industry need to provide critical field and shop services and manufacturing of power, process and paper industry plant heat transfer equipment including high pressure feedwater heaters, steam condensers and other heat exchangers. AmX also provides advance fabrication technologies for the manufacture of high reliability feedwater heaters and heat exchangers.
Tom is a diligent contributor to industry organizations. He has authored numerous ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) technical papers on feedwater heaters and condensers, and has presented additional papers at several EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) Symposiums on High Pressure Feedwater Heaters and Joint Power Generation Conferences. He has also hosted webinars on Main Steam Condenser Design and instructed at the many EPRI Seminars on Feedwater Heaters.
In addition to the expertise in the field of heat transfer, Tom also has provided leadership in the field of high energy rate fabrication, authoring papers on topics including Explosive Welding repairs in nuclear and critical service application. To this end, AmX has been involved in several very specialized and unique R&D projects. One memorable project was building a complex prototype fusion vacuum chamber for a HSX nuclear fusion reactor. In addition, AmX has been involved in boiler tube sleeving, boiler tube explosive stub removal, and explosive forming of the end cowling of a steam turbine.
Tom was also called on to provide expert witness testimony in a lawsuit brought by a group of States’ Attorneys General acidification of lakes in the northeast portion of the United States against a large utility.
As power generation moves toward decarbonization in the future, Tom created a patent on a renewable power generation based only on seasonal temperature changes with a Power Recovery Condensing System. Using its advanced second law thermodynamic software and patented equipment and system designs, AmX will help reduce carbon emissions at exiting and new power plants by increasing efficiency and green generation.
After 37 years of operation, AmX is looking forward to new opportunities and innovations in providing Power, Process and Renewable Energy markets with the best possible engineering and fabrication.
Kellen J. Muldoon
Kellen leads both the Engineering and Sales departments. Since 2013, Kellen has been integral in expanding the company's domestic and international reach, particularly in emerging international markets. To this end, the AmX team was awarded the Exporter of the Year (Great Lakes Region) Award from the SBA in 2015.
Kellen's expertise lies in providing value to customers through reliable service and the most effectively engineered equipment and services including Feedwater Heaters, Steam Surface Condensers, and BOP Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers.
Kellen holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he also played on the men’s soccer team. He received his PE License in May of 2022.
